This Book is Growing on Me: Part 1

I imagined this book to be very different than it is. With a title like Growing a Farmer, a reader can only expect something like instructional pages on how to sow a field. I was thankfully surprised to find this wasn't the case. The book is the personal account of a small time restauranteur who starts actually caring about the food he puts on the table. When Kurt Timmermeister realized that he couldn't eat the food at his own restaurant anymore, he wanted to open a farm and explore the challenges of growing food how it should be. The first challenge was that Kurt lived in the middle of Seattle. He opens a farm nearby on the island of Vashon and starts establishing his boutique farm. Since he does not have any farmers in his family, there was no knowledge passed down. He needed to learn everything on his own. Kurt had no idea where to buy farming equipment, learned how to be part of a farmers market, and how to sell his product.

The book was a little bit strange at first. The introduction was hard to put together with the overall theme of the book. However, as I read more, I started liking the plot. You start to relate with Kurt and appreciate what he is trying to do when he begins his farming journey. The writing style is very plain, which makes it hard to pick up the book at times. It is a different style from most of what I have read, but refreshing nonetheless.
